Telegram Registration, Recovery Email, and Download Guide
Telegram signup still needs a phone number, but a recovery email and two-step verification are what actually save you when that number stops working.

Someone switches to a new SIM card while traveling and finds themselves locked out of Telegram entirely. No recovery email was ever set. The account isn't gone forever, but getting back in takes far longer than it should have, and the whole ordeal traces back to one setting most people skip during signup.
Telegram still requires a phone number to register, that part isn't optional. What is optional, and frequently ignored, is everything you do right after that first login to make the account recoverable when the phone number stops being reliable.
Registration still starts with a phone number
Download Telegram, open it, and enter your phone number to receive a verification code by SMS or, on some accounts, through an existing Telegram session on another device. That's the entire signup flow. There's no email-only registration path on Telegram, despite what some guides imply.
The real security work happens after that first code is confirmed. Skipping it is how people end up locked out later with no way back in except waiting on the phone number to become reachable again.
Turning on two-step verification and linking a recovery email
Inside Settings, under Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification adds a password on top of the SMS code. Anyone who somehow gets your verification code still can't log in without that password. During setup, Telegram asks for a recovery email specifically for password resets, not for general notifications.

Once two-step verification is on, you can also hide your phone number from other users entirely in the same privacy menu, which matters more than people expect if the account is tied to a business or public-facing role.
Getting Telegram on the device you plan to use
Installation differs slightly by platform, and mixing them up wastes time. Mobile users grab the app from Google Play or the App Store. Desktop users can install a native client for Windows, Mac, or Linux from Telegram's own site, or skip installation entirely and use the web version at web.telegram.org, which is handy for quick access on a shared or work computer without leaving an app installed.

If you still get locked out
Even with two-step verification and a recovery email set up correctly, recovery isn't instant. Telegram's own account recovery flow can take time to process, especially for older accounts with unusual sign-in patterns. If you no longer have access to a specific device or phone number and need a working account quickly, buying an account outright is a route some people take instead of waiting on recovery. Suppliers on the Telegram accounts marketplace list a range of ready-to-use options, and prices and included setup vary a fair amount between them, so check delivery method and seller rating rather than picking the first listing.
If a new number is the missing piece rather than the whole account, an SMS verification number can get a fresh registration through the initial code step without tying it to a personal phone. Pairing that with a subscription upgrade through Telegram Premium once the account is stable is a separate, later decision, not something to rush during recovery.
A short setup checklist worth running once
Do this once, right after your first login, and most future lockout scenarios stop being a problem.
- Turn on two-step verification and set a password you don't reuse elsewhere.
- Link a recovery email you check regularly, not a dormant inbox.
- Review the active sessions list and log out anything you don't recognize.
- Set phone number visibility to a level you're comfortable with publicly.
- Note down which device is your "primary" one, so you know which login to trust if something looks off later.
