The confusing thing about email accounts here is the price range. The cheapest listings sit at a fraction of the median and the dearest at ten times it, and the gap is not explained by the provider or by whichever tag the title leads with. Two attributes move it: the year the mailbox was registered, and the IP it was registered on. Aged email accounts from before 2017 run about ten times the median, while Gmail accounts as a brand add roughly threefold. Work out those two first, decide whether you need an inbox that merely receives mail or one you can sign into, and the provider question mostly answers itself.
Sorted by how far each attribute moves the price against this category median. The two at the top are not the ones listings advertise hardest, and the provider sits lower than most buyers expect.

A quarter of this category sits near the bottom of that table. Those listings are not a bargain version of the expensive ones. They are a different product, and buying one by mistake is the most common way to waste money here.
Across this category, IMAP and SMTP mark the cheap bulk end at roughly a third of the median. On the Gmail subcategory the same tag sits at around three times its median, because Google closes that door by default and an open one is scarce. Do not carry the assumption between pages.
Receiving one code and discarding the address needs nothing above the cheapest tier. Holding an address you can recover means jumping straight to the listings with a recovery email; the tiers in between save very little.
The provider decides the base price and which platforms will accept the address at signup. It does not decide the order of magnitude. Gmail is a third of this category; the rest spreads across Outlook, Hotmail, Proton, GMX and a long tail of smaller services.

Outlook accounts and Hotmail are the same Microsoft mailboxes, often labelled both ways in one title. Cheaper than Gmail and easier to register in volume, which is what most bulk email accounts here are.

Receiving codes, or signing in and holding the address. This decides which price tier you should even be looking at, and skipping it means comparing listings that were never comparable.
These two set the order of magnitude. Fix them and the range collapses to something you can actually read.
Check which fields ship, whether it opens in a browser, and how many hours the warranty runs. Titles do not carry all three.
