Almost every search around this topic is the same request phrased eight ways: all my inboxes, in one place, in one app. Not a filing system, not a naming convention, one window. That request has a precise technical answer, and it is not about discipline or tooling. It is about whether each provider will let a mail client talk to the mailbox at all.
One protocol decides the whole thing
A mail client pulls messages over IMAP, or over the older POP3, and sends over SMTP. If a provider gives you IMAP, that inbox can live inside Thunderbird or Outlook or Apple Mail alongside every other one, and the aggregation problem is solved. If it does not, that inbox stays behind its own web login and its own tab, and no amount of workflow design changes that.
Which means the useful question when you are acquiring or choosing inboxes is never how many you can keep organised. It is which of them will actually open in a client.
The availability split, counted across 4,744 live listings
Here is the part that is genuinely surprising, measured today across every live email listing on the marketplace. The share of listings that state IMAP in the title, by provider:
- Nearly always: AOL at about nine in ten, T-Online and Yahoo at more than eight, Rambler at close to eight, GMX at about three quarters.
- Sometimes: Outlook at roughly three in ten, Firstmail at a quarter.
- Rarely: Hotmail, Mail.com, Proton and Mail.ru all around one in eight. Yandex at three in a hundred.
- Almost never: Onet at one in a hundred, and Gmail at eighteen listings out of 1,636. Educational addresses and disposable mail: none at all.
Read that last line again, because it inverts the obvious assumption. The Gmail shelf is the largest on the site by more than a factor of two, it is the provider most people reach for first, and it is the one where the protocol you need is essentially never on offer. The small regional providers nobody thinks about are where a mail client just works.
So if the actual goal is one window with everything in it, the provider you would have picked by reflex is the one that defeats the goal. That is not a reason to avoid Gmail, which is chosen for other things entirely, but it is a reason to stop expecting a mixed set of inboxes to behave uniformly.
Two-factor authentication is what closes the door
The mechanism behind the split is worth understanding, because it also tells you what to buy. When a provider enforces two-factor authentication, a mail client cannot present a second factor. The provider's answer is an app password: a separate credential issued specifically for a client that cannot do the interactive challenge.
On this marketplace, 247 live listings name an app password in the title, and they price at nearly three times the email shelf median. That premium is the whole story in one number. Where the provider closes client access by default, the credential that reopens it is the expensive part of the listing, and where the provider never closed it, nobody charges for the key.
Practically: if a listing states two-factor authentication but says nothing about IMAP or an app password, assume web login only, and assume that inbox is not joining your client.
What to check before you commit to a set of inboxes
- The protocol, by name. IMAP, POP3, SMTP. Not "full access", which is a marketing phrase with no fixed meaning. Titles here do state the protocols when they are available, so silence is informative.
- An app password, if two-factor is on. Without one, the two facts do not combine.
- Whether it is web-only. A handful of listings say so outright. Believe them.
- The provider, not the price. The cheap shelves and the IMAP shelves overlap heavily, which makes it easy to conclude that IMAP is cheap. It is not. That reading is an artefact of which providers happen to be inexpensive, and inside a single provider's shelf the picture reverses.
Where the inboxes are, including one place you would not look
The email category is where almost all of this sits, split by provider. One oddity is worth knowing: three Proton.me mailbox listings are filed under the proxy category instead, because their titles mention that a VPN comes with the account. They are ordinary mailbox listings with IMAP, POP3, SMTP and webmail stated, and they will not appear if you only browse the email shelf. If you are shopping for Proton specifically, check both.
While you are there, be aware that the proxy category is itself mostly not proxies: of its 82 live listings, 35 are consumer VPN subscriptions. That matters if you are also buying the network layer, because a VPN routes your entire machine through one shared exit, which is precisely the thing you want to avoid when several mailboxes are supposed to look unrelated.
Running many inboxes without linking them
Getting them into one client and keeping them unlinked are different projects, and the second one has nothing to do with mail. Separate browser profiles for the web logins, a fingerprint browser if the accounts are meant to look unrelated, and one network address per account rather than all of them behind the office connection. Residential addresses are the part of the proxy shelf that is stocked and that people actually buy; roughly nine in ten of the proxy units sold here are residential.
